Advanced brain scanning technologies show that the senses share perceptual supra-modalities (high order cerebral networks) that catalyse sensory crossovers or synaesthetic productions (see Harry Francis Mallgrave, 2010). This project makes sound materially manifest, translating the aural (music) into touch and vision (colour particularly). It draws on theories of musical and colour harmony, relating for instance music’s pitch, timbre and volume to colour’s hue, chroma and value. It also connects the notation of music to texture. These experiments in visual music and musical vision, tactile music and musical tactility may eventually lead to a machine that reads the music of the things around us, to heal or merely entertain.
