My name is Hsin-Yu Tseng. I was a Design: Critical Practice student at Goldsmiths University in London. Our contemporary existence is fashioned by what we have designed, namely, can be everything.

Nowadays, culture and creative industry is the most popular topic people do and talk. Lots people might be curious what is critical practice actually in the design field. We are designing not only the design ‘thing’, but also who and what we are, and how we engage with the world around us. Thus, design needs to find a critical purchase on its own practice and what it effects in the world. Art too. Personally, design is a story we tell so it is more about to involve defining concept triggers and then testing them to see what lies outside the definition.

Product design identifies problems and proposes solutions, with a desire to do something better. Processes which carry designs from conception through to production are challenging and intriguing. To me, product design has a depth of philosophy. It is a combination of the ideal and the rational, of proportion and lineation, of rebelliousness, re-interpretation and originality.  Design is an art of outlining and creating, with everything possible; my own interest began at 13 with airplane manufacture, eventually leading to Industrial Design studies at university level.

:: EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

LINGLONG Design inc.

6F-7 No. 53-4 Sec.3 Zhong Shan N. Rd. Taipei 104 Taiwan

Full-time job as Project Designer:

Working at Linglong Inc. my title was Project Designer, which entailed engaging with a variety of projects every day, from graphic design to web design. This was wonderful training, since I learned how to participate in each phase of the design process. Most often I designed the brand CI, graphics, and copywriting. I worked from preliminary sketching of the product, then using computer assisted design programs to develop a three-dimensional rendition. Time was spent each day researching new materials for these designs. Every fortnight I visited the factories that were making the designs to inspect the products for quality control.

Internship and part-time job:

While at design college I gained this internship at DEM, a famous Taiwan design company producing multiple types of design. My work involved multiple projects running simultaneously, all at various stages of production. A typical day involved meeting with designers, sales officers, marketing and production people, for work on the design of new products. My involvement even extended to brand strategy, conceiving a new product for a coffee shop chain, a new activity kit program, and even a groovy new image for a magazine cover. Through this work I learned how to plan and carry out in-depth research, provide creative, unique business insight and act as a creative copywriter covering brand strategy and design concept, then coordinating the work of the team. I also realized that working as an industrial designer is not all about your creative genius. There are so many factors that can determine whether or not a product will be successful. You need to liaise with a whole range of people with sales, marketing and engineering backgrounds.
